Touching the life of a prisoner

Nation: Kenya

Kamiti

Field of action: Main needs

Referent: Nancy A. Owak

STARTING YEAR: 2022
CODE: AS 441

Objective

Kamiti Medium Prison is a penal institution in the Nairobi region. It is the largest prison in Nairobi and has a population of 1000 adult male prisoners.
The project aims to provide support to give the prisoners humane conditions in which to live.
Two types of aid will therefore be provided: a material one, with basic necessities to live in decent conditions, and a human one, with visits in which to build relationships.

Beneficiaries

The beneficiaries of the project are all prisoners, without distinction.
Conditions in the prison are not good because of the number of prisoners. The prisoners often lack toiletries and most of them sleep on the wet floor because there are not enough mattresses; only the strongest, struggling, manage to get the few mattresses and blankets. This situation is a frequent cause of illness. There is an academy inside the prison, but there is not enough stationery.
Some prisoners have been abandoned by friends and relatives. No one visits them in prison. They have lost hope.
