Adopt a teacher

Nation: India

Villages in the Diocese of Kumbakonam

Area of field: Education

Referent: Adaikalasamy Erudayam

STARTNG: 2009
CODE: AS 342

Aim

The project aims to reach as many children as possible to give them the opportunity to study. In many villages, as there is not yet a structure that can be defined as a “school”, children have been expected to reach the church – which becomes a classroom for a few hours a day – and they attend classes from 17.00 to 20.00. In some villages it is also carried out in open places. The teachers who make themselves available are educators, prepared for this task, but who do not yet have a stable job. Knowing reality so closely, educators can adapt the rhythm of the lessons to the learning possibilities of the children and follow them step by step in their concrete difficulties.

The goal is therefore to financially support educators who lend themselves to training; they are teachers waiting for a stable job who, living in the area, can know and adapt the educational programs according to need.

Beneficiaries

In the diocese there are 93 parishes and each parish includes from 5 to 10 villages. They will benefit from this project:

  • from 30 to 60 children per village;
  • parents who request it;
  • educators who will be able to have at least a part-time job;
  • the community itself which, in those areas so often forgotten and far from essential services, will find families more peace of mind about the future of their children;
  • it is not secondary that the cultural heritage of the entire village undergoes an increase, offering the possibility of redemption from truly miserable situations.

COST: € 15 per month per teacher. A commitment of at least two years is required to allow programming and continuity.
